Best way to experience the 4th of July in NYC

December 16, 2022 | By Or Goldschmidt

There is no doubt that one of the top things to do in New York in July is to attend the 4th of July event. In addition to the famous Macy’s Fireworks spectacle, there's plenty of other amazing events just waiting for you to see.

Right before we jump into it, let’s remind you that a short-term rental in New York is a thing. If you visit for more than a few days consider renting a coliving space for yourself. There’s no better alternative than a place well accessorized and organized for you to lay your head.

Without further ado, here are the top things to do if you find yourself in New York this 4th of July:

Watch the famous Nathan’s Hot Dog eating contest

While you’re in New York, be sure to stop by Coney Island and not miss the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest – an annual tradition on Independence Day since 1972. The challenge is simple: to eat as many hot dogs as you can in just 10 minutes! The current record for men is at 73 whooping hot dogs! For women, it’s just 37 hot dogs for now.

Luckily, you don’t need any tickets, it’s a free experience and a very entertaining one, so just stop by! Please be sure to be there on time (the event starts at 10:30), because If you are late, chances are you won’t get to see anything. Every year about 30,000 people come to watch the competitive eaters. Although there are some jumbo screens, so you won’t miss the contest completely, it's always more fun to experience it in person.

Have a bbq in Central Park

Don’t miss out on this chance! Grilling and barbecuing inside Central Park is only allowed three days a year: on the 4th of July, Memorial Day, and Labor Day. You can use anything to start the fire, just note that the use of propane gas is still and always strictly prohibited!

To buy a reasonably priced grill (about 35 bucks), you should head to Best Buy. Everything you want to put onto the grill can be bought at any supermarket or local butcher. Make sure you find a spot early because many people will sit all around Central Park and it can be a little packed.

Take a cruise

Many touring and cruising companies offer a fireworks cruise, pick your favorite route and take a long relaxing cruise with a unique view of the famous fireworks event. Some companies also offer a free buffet or alcoholic beverages included in the ticket price. Not only food and drink, on some boats you might find a show like singing, dancing, or even acrobatic performers. Make sure you go through all the different offers so you can pick the best one for you.

The cruise usually starts around noon and runs until the fireworks end, so if you want to do anything else make sure to start early. This option is truly recommended for people that don’t like to walk or prefer not to stand for too long but still want to see the fireworks from up close.

Enjoy The Freedom Festival

Freedom Fest is a nighttime celebration on Pier 15 in the Tribeca neighborhood. Tickets are not so cheap, starting at $195, but they do include a lot: you can watch the fireworks with a DJ playing your favorite tunes in the background, an open bar, and a BBQ buffet including all the American cuisines like burgers, hot dogs, pulled pork sliders, and chicken wings. It's fun for the entire family, but be sure to bring your ID if you want to drink some alcohol.

The location is on a pier in the middle of the water, so you'll get that gorgeous summertime breeze. Keep in mind that with that nice breeze it might get a little chilly, so for those who usually have a hard time with the cold weather, bring a jacket.

Make sure you don't miss the New York 4th of July experience with Roomrs!
