The best things about living in New York City

December 14, 2022 | By Zack Schoem

Sometimes we can focus on the drawbacks to city life, but the reality is, there are so many advantages to calling New York home. From job opportunities to culture, or nightlife, below is a list that highlights the best things about living in New York City.

1. Cultural Diversity

New York City is a melting pot of people from all over the world. In specific neighborhoods, you may have a vast majority of people that consider themselves belonging to one specific cultural background. This in turn affects the atmosphere, landmarks, food, and so much more. For example, there is a very large population of Caribbean people that live in Brooklyn. A person who recently moved to New York from the Caribbean might think they won’t get to taste food native to their island unless they return home. In actuality, Brooklyn has an abundance of Caribbean restaurants offering the most authentic island food. This is true of many other cultures and ethnicities. New York boasts Little Italy, Chinatown, Koreatown, Little Guyana, Spanish Harlem among others.

2. Convenience

Ever wanted to order take out at 1 am but not find one place that delivers. This is a non-factor in New York. Not only are food spots open late at night, but for convenience stores, liquor stores, and even retail stores in some cases! Additionally, wherever you need to go, it's either in close proximity to you, or easy to get to. The convenience of living in New York is unlike other parts of the United States.

3. Food

Speaking of late-night food spots, the restaurant scene here is unmatched. You can go eat at a new place every night, and still not scratch the surface of all the amazing eateries the city has to offer. Not to mention, any and every kind of food you can think of. Whether you like Italian, Mexican, Chinese, Greek, French, you name it, they have it! If you keep ordering out from the same place that’s two blocks away from your house, do yourself a favor and switch it up! Your palate will thank you.

4. Nightlife and events

In New York City, there is always something happening. Try googling “what to do this weekend” and prepare to scroll endlessly. From nightclubs, bars, sports, concerts, theatre, and other events; you can experience in one weekend what some people haven’t experienced in the last year. They don’t call it the city that never sleeps for anything.

5. Meeting people is easy

You might be intimidated by the belief that New Yorkers are mean, but in actuality, they are some of the kindest and most open-minded people you will ever meet. Because there is always something happening, there is always an opportunity to meet new people. If you muster up the courage to go out alone, by the time you leave you would have made at least one new connection.

6. Variety

New Yorkers have access to so much variety. Just getting on the subway and traveling 20-30 minutes to a different borough can feel like you’re somewhere new entirely. Bored of your local pizzeria? There are hundreds to choose from. Don’t like the clothes at the vintage store down the street? Search google and find 10 other options in seconds. Starbucks made your coffee wrong? Try Dunkin’ Donuts, Joe & The Juice, or support the hundreds of small coffee businesses. The point is, options are endless. If you’re a person that gets bored of repetition, New York might be the place for you.

7. There’s always something to do

You may leave the house with absolutely no idea what you’re going to do that day, and return home much later, only to FaceTime your mom and tell her how busy your day was. Just walking through the city every day feels like an adventure in itself, but things always come up along the way. Whether you bump into a friend that invites you out to lunch, see a pop-up store that wasn’t there the night before, or happened upon a new dog park to take your pup out on a stroll; New York is one big playground.

8. Opportunity

Dreams come true in New York. It’s true that the competition here is steep, but there is always an opportunity to network and make things happen for yourself. Living in the city, you never know who you might run into and when, so always be willing to foster relationships and make connections. It can be difficult to put yourself out there, but if you work hard, you can achieve anything you put your mind to.
