6 Ways to Celebrate New Year's Eve in NYC

December 9, 2022 | By Or Goldschmidt

For many of us, the last New Year’s Eve countdown was somewhat of a bummer. Still dealing with the effects of lockdown and covid restrictions, it didn’t feel like there was much to celebrate. So this year, whether you’re looking to have a crazy night out, or want to keep things more laid back, we’ve got some great suggestions for you.

Keep reading to uncover some of the city's best attractions on New Year's Eve.

The Times Square Ball Drop

We can’t talk about New Year's Eve in the city without mentioning the iconic Times Square ball drop. First held in 1907, this broadcasted event draws in millions of spectators every year. The ceremony begins with the raising of the ball, and of course, the height of the festivities is the countdown to midnight, when the ball finally drops. If you’re considering attending, make sure to arrive very early (as these events tend to have large crowds). Also, keep in mind that the weather during this time is on the colder side, so don’t forget to bundle up in heavy layers. Feel free to pack snacks, some water, etc; but remember that alcohol is not allowed in public spaces in NYC. So you might have to wait till you get home to pop open the champagne.

Harbor Fire Works

This firework display is set off over Liberty Island and can be seen over the New York Harbor. Catch the show from the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, Manhattan’s Battery Park, or take a boat tour through the harbor itself. If you’re interested, many companies offer packages with food and drinks included; but prices can be a bit steep. If you’re looking to keep things on the cheaper end, just hop on the ferry! Either way, it’s a light show you don’t want to miss.

Free Ride Organized by Time’s Up

Want to stay active all while enjoying the festive spirit of New Year's Eve? Time’s Up arranges a free ride every year that spans from Washington Park to Central Park. The event caters to both bikers and skaters, who leave Washington Park at 10pm. If you’re looking for alternate starting points, the Williamsburg Bridge (start time 9:45) and Madison Square Park (start time 10:20) are also options. Both riders and onlookers are encouraged to dress up in their most extravagant outfits and enjoy a dance party once the ride is complete. You’ll even be able to catch the Central Park fireworks!

McKittrick Hotel 2022 New Year’s Eve

If you’re looking to make your New Years' Eve memorable, think about purchasing a ticket to the New Year's Eve event at the McKittrick Hotel. With an open bar, as well as live music and performances, you can leave all your worries at the door and dance the night away. Want to skip the line? Get on Maximilian’s List, for quick entry and access to Oz’s Boudoir bar. Have a large party? Consider making a reservation for your own exclusive Champagne Table and watch the drinks flow

Carolines on Broadway: New Year’s Eve Spectacular

Carolines on Broadway hosts their annual New Year’s Eve Spectacular event (also dubbed “the funniest party in the universe”). It’s hard to think of a better way to bring in 2022 than falling out of your chair in laughter. The night consists of two big shows highlighting the best comedians in the country. This year features acts by Ashton Womack, Alvin Kuai, and Chanel Ali, to name a few. Enjoy food and drinks, and even watch the live ball drop that is broadcasted on their 10-foot tv screen. After midnight, there will be party favors and a live Dj, so you can dance to your heart's content

Watermark’s Winter Wonderland at Pier 15

The Watermark Bar on Pier 15 hosts a New Year's Eve celebration. You can enjoy waterfront views accompanied by a background of the Brooklyn skyline. The space has been transformed; and features glasshouses, lights, festive decorations, and a 10,000 square foot outdoor bar! Guests who attend this event will have a specially curated menu, specialty cocktails, and champagne for their table (all drinks are included in the price of your ticket, with an open bar for the time slot in which you attend the event). There is even a jumbo screen that lives streams the famous NYC ball drop as well. This is a kid-friendly event as all ages are welcome
